Oct 24, 2016 | Posted in News

As a part of the Wellness for Life program, a Tobacco Cessation Class will be offered on Tuesday’s, beginning November 8th and running through December 13th from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Regional Cancer Center. This six week course will be held at RCC and all patients and caregivers are welcome to attend this class, free of charge.

Led by Alex Iorio, B.S., Tobacco Cessation Specialist from the Erie County Department of Health, this class will afford participants the opportunity to learn the tools to quit once and for all. Alex previously worked at the RCC and is very committed to patients’ health and well-being.

“Our thoracic clinic is extremely busy,” explains RCC’s Survivorship Navigator/Wellness & Community Education Coordinator, Sarah Humphrey, RN, BSN. “We see upwards of six new patients a week, and smoking contributes to 80-90% of lung cancer deaths in women and men respectively.” By studying these cases at the Center, it has been discovered that statistics show that men who smoke are 23 times more likely to develop a lung cancer diagnosis.

By offering this cessation class at RCC, the hope is that many patients interested in the session will feel comfortable attending, as they are familiar with the location.

To register, please contact Sarah at 814-836-2642 or by email. Further information on other Wellness for Life classes, as well as this one, may be found by visiting here
