“The fear of going through treatment petrifies a lot of people…

James Roden of French Creek, NY is glad to be alive today after a very difficult diagnosis of advanced esophageal cancer. He is aware that the prognosis for patients with this type of cancer is not very good. “If I wouldn’t have had the chemo and radiation therapy at the cancer center before my surgery, it would have been a different story,” he says. James received both chemotherapy and radiation therapy at RCC. His cancer treatment was coordinated with Drs. Jan Rothman and Conrad Stachelek at RCC, and his surgeon, Dr. Manisha Shende at UPMC Hamot, for an optimal outcome. James wanted to share his story to encourage others. “The fear of going through treatment petrifies a lot of people, but treatment now is not the way it used to be. It was amazing that I had no side effects from my cancer treatment and I want others to know not to be afraid of it,” he explains. Now James says his prognosis is “pretty good.” He is enjoying his retirement and glad to be sharing encouraging news about the benefits of cancer treatment with anyone who may be facing it.
